Preparing for Your Summer Travels?
As you plan your summer adventures, ensuring you have the right insurance for your vacation trailer or motorhome is crucial. Understanding the insurance requirements specific to your type of trailer can help you protect your investment and enjoy a worry-free trip. Gain valuable knowledge on insurance tips with this article
Trailer Insurance Essentials
If your trailer is towed by another vehicle, such as a car or truck, and lacks its own engine, it typically isn’t mandated to have its own insurance. However, insuring these trailers is recommended due to their high value. Coverage can be added to an existing auto or home policy, or obtained through standalone insurance.
Motorhomes, which are self-propelled, require auto insurance in line with Ontario’s mandatory auto insurance laws.
Types of Vacation Trailers:
Travel Trailer:
Travel trailers are popular for their versatility and amenities, including sleeping areas, kitchenettes, and bathrooms. They range from compact models to larger versions suitable for families. While they don’t need individual insurance, adding coverage to your auto policy is possible, though it may raise your premiums.
Fifth Wheel Trailer:
Fifth wheel trailers, which connect over the bed of a pickup truck, offer enhanced maneuverability and additional space. Like travel trailers, they don’t require separate insurance but can be covered through your auto or sometimes home policy.
Folding Tent Trailer
Also known as pop-up campers, these trailers are compact and cost-effective. They feature tent-like structures that can be expanded for use. Similar to other towable trailers, they don’t need individual insurance but can be added to auto or home policies for some coverage.
Insuring Motorhomes
Motorhomes must have their own insurance due to their motorized nature. These vehicles combine living spaces with transportation and require policies similar to those for cars, including liability, accident benefits, and uninsured auto coverage. Optional coverages like collision, comprehensive, and emergency vacation expenses are also available. For motorhomes over 11,000 kg, a special driver’s license is needed.
Insurance Options for Towable Trailers
When insuring towable trailers, consider these options:
Add to Auto Policy: Liability coverage might already be included, but additional protection for physical damage and emergency expenses can be added.
Add to Home Policy: This isn’t always available, but when it is, it can cover collisions or theft.
Standalone Policy: This allows for customized coverage, including liability, collision, emergency expenses, and content protection within the trailer.
Bundling your RV or motorhome insurance with your home and auto policies can save you money while ensuring you have comprehensive coverage for your travels.
