Commercial vehicle owners will be required to pass annual inspection

Commercial vehicle owners will be required to keep up their vehicles and pass an annual inspection for PMCVI and semi-annual inspections for passenger buses. Window inspection stickers will need to be displayed but the criteria for a successful inspection will be changing in 2023.

The ministry is starting with a one test and one result approach to emission and safety requirements on commercial vehicles. What this means for diesel CMV’s is a greater importance for practicing regular maintenance with the potential for pretesting your vehicle before inspections.

Diesel CMV emission inspection requirements are changing for vehicles produced after 2011 with the lowered standard to 10% smoke opacity from 20% that was the previous standard. New technology in CMVs is now reducing emission standards close to 0% and the goal of this change is to focus on bringing new vehicles into the workforce that could significantly lower carbon emissions.

Visual checks will also be done for annual emissions components to verify, diesel particulate filters and regeneration systems as well as the diesel exhaust fluid system on all CMVs. There is also a new advisory for OBD inspection on diesel CMVs over 6350kg and built in the model year 2016 and newer. These added factors will seek to target emissions in newer vehicles.

The extent of these changes will be rolling out up until August of 2023. Inspection facilities can enrol in the new program until June of 2023 and have been implementing the new standards since June 30th.

In order to achieve a clean inspection report and continue operating, you may need to consider upgrading your vehicle, getting a professional safety or pre checking emissions before these new standards are uniform across the province. By doing your part to reduce emissions and keep highways safe, you can enjoy less downtime and a cleaner future for our world.
